Recession a Great Opportunity to Remain Up to Date
This fall I had some terrific opportunities to participate in meetings where the economic development plans for Guelph and Centre Wellington were formulated and announced.
Guelph recently announced their Ten Year Strategic Development Plan would focus on encouraging development in three areas: IT, Finance, and AgriTech/BioTech. With such a broad spectrum, the vertical integration and encouragement of alternate energy, this means many occupations at all levels which translate to jobs for all levels. The Golden triangle is the fastest growing area in Canada, and this will keep it in the forefront.
Centre Wellington held a fall Economic Development Conference to find out the key concerns. Quality of life and business in the Agricultural Base and the health of the small communities scattered throughout were in the forefront. Opportunities for youth, choice in jobs for everyone and stability gained through vertical development of AgriBased industry, and upgrading of the infrastructure were seen as the way to accomplish the goal.
One third of Guelph’s Market is outside the city, and if this is accomplished in each of the Townships in Wellington County, it will make for a stable economy.
